microbiology

Microbiology is a field of medicine involved with diagnosing and treating infectious diseases caused by micro-organisms. These include bacteria, mycobacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

The Ampath Microbiology Department is one of the first fully automated diagnostic microbiology laboratories in Africa.

We provide comprehensive microbiology services to doctors working in hospitals and out-patient practices. Clinical specimens are processed in bacteriology, mycology and mycobacteriology for microscopy, culture and susceptibility testing.

Diagnostics in infectious diseases is enhanced by our state of the art molecular laboratory, serology and immunology departments.

We work closely with clinicians for the well-being of our patients.

Clinical support services include consultations with doctors and multidisciplinary ward rounds are provided by our Ampath team.

Our Microbiologists also assist practitioners and hospitals with infection control issues such as superbugs, outbreaks, and the appropriate use of antimicrobials (stewardship).
