Human identification testing is used primarily to verify paternity in cases of dispute, match forensic samples to suspects and to identify human remains.

Ampath provides specialized pathology testing aligned with good occupational health practice code of conduct, the Occupational Safety and Health Act No. 85 of 1993, and the Employment Equity Act Section 7.

The purpose of our pathology and consultative services is to assist the occupational health and safety team in industry in the prevention of occupational health risk and disease through anticipation, recognition, identification, and monitoring of workplace stressors and employee’s health.

In addition, the employer is assisted in maintaining compliance with legislation (OSH Act, Hazardous Substances Act, etc) and company policies.

Ampath provides the relevant pathology tests required for medical surveillance which is a planned program of periodic examination of employees that includes biological monitoring, biological effect monitoring, and other laboratory tests deemed necessary by the occupational medicine practitioner (eg. screening for chronic non-communicable disease such as diabetes mellitus, drugs of abuse screening, etc).

Hence, this provides an important link to primary health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Biological monitoring of exposure detects and quantifies the exposure to hazardous substances (i.e. the measure of the degree of absorption into the body) by measurement of the biochemical concentrations of the specific substances and/or its metabolites such as lead, mercury, etc in biological samples (urine, blood, etc.).

It’s important to ensure that worker exposure does not reach levels capable of eliciting adverse effects.

  • Ampath utilizes specialized testing methodologies and analysers that include:
  • atomic absorption (metal analyses on urine, blood and serum)
  • mass spectrometry (Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for metal analyses)
  • chromatography (Liquid Chromatography -MS/MS, Gas Chromatography-MS, High- Performance Liquid Chromatography with Fluorescent and Electrochemical detectors).

For detailed information (biological exposure and effect monitoring) regarding medical surveillance of chemical exposures and metals refer to the Ampath Medical Surveillance Guidelines.
