General Molecular Biology Info

WHAT IS MOLECULAR BIOLOGY?

Molecular biology is the study of the molecular building blocks of a patient. It examines the structure, function, and makeup of the various systems of a cell.

Advanced molecular assays allow us to study the interrelationship of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and how these interactions are regulated.

We can also utilize molecular biology assays and techniques to better understand a patient’s gene replication, mutation, and expression.

WHAT IS MOLECULAR BIOLOGY USED FOR?

Molecular biology assays allow us to help physicians make accurate diagnoses of various conditions.

Some applications of molecular biology include:

  • DNA Forensics
  • Genomics
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Gene Therapy

AMPATH’S MOLECULAR LABORATORY DEPARTMENT

The Molecular Biology Laboratory is a state-of-the-art, SANAS accredited laboratory responsible for testing infectious pathogens using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology.

At present, the laboratory offers more than 60 different molecular tests, which includes a wide range of bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral pathogens, including Covid19.

The laboratory is continuously improving and implementing the latest technology in order to stay at the forefront of infectious disease diagnostics.
